4 hours ago Cowboys news: Prescott, Lamb contracts dominate Dallas’ pre-draft discussion
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports The latest news surrounding the Dallas Cowboys. Jones speaks on Cowboys contracts: 'We want Dak' - Patrik Walker, DallasCowboys.com Even though contract talks are stagnant, it appears Dallas still wants Dak. As the 2024 NFL Draft rapidly approaches, the Cowboys find themselves balancing their big board and the reality of needing to secure current cornerstone talent for the future. That includes Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons — effectively dubbed “The Big 3” in Dallas. So, to put it plainly, what’s the holdup? “We’d like to see more leaves fall,” said owner and general manager Jerry Jones, speaking from the team’s pre-draft press conference. “We’d like to see more action. It’s called option quarterback. I’ve spent my life [playing] option quarterback. I want to see some more cards played.” In other words, Jones and the Cowboys don't feel they have enough information — be it from the player's side of the negotiation and the market itself — to formulate their offers, understanding fully that conventional wisdom dictates the longer the wait, the more expensive the contract. All told, the front office in Dallas prefers to move slowly and deliberately. “When you’re talking about big contracts like Dak, CeeDee and Micah, those things don’t happen overnight,” said executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones. “Those things take time. There’s timing based on what other teams are doing at their position. "There's a lot of moving parts. Certainly, you wanna get it right. … When you're paying the type of money we ultimately will have to, to keep them, you wanna make sure you get it right." The most infuriating, honest Jerry Jones quote from Cowboys pre-draft presser - Todd Brock, Cowboys Wire Some came away from Tuesday's press conference less than pleased. The majority of Cowboys fans came away from Tuesday’s pre-draft press conference either confused or mad. And probably both. But for all the headline-grabbing quotes and sports-talk-show soundbites to come out of the Q&A session, there was one sentence where Jones may have slipped up and told the honest-to-god truth. Over the course of 52 minutes, Jerry and Stephen Jones managed to re-stoke the fires that kicked up after his infamous “all in” comments. They got testy trying to justify why their three most important players are still waiting on contract extensions 100 days after getting bounced from the playoffs. They offered explanations about how the salary cap works, as if the concept is brand new and just too complicated for the average fan to grasp. In short, they attempted to make themselves sound like rocket scientists who have some singularly unique understanding of how to assemble a championship roster… even though they haven’t done so in three decades. But Jones refuses to set the market with Dak Prescott. He wants to wait to see what Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase get before sitting down with CeeDee Lamb. He’s happy to deal with Micah Parsons only when he has to, even if it’s exponentially pricier once he gets there. And he’s more than willing to look his lame-duck head coach square in the eye and tell him to win more with a lesser roster. If not for the owner’s homespun bravado and carnival-barker proclamations about the promise of the 2024 Cowboys, one could look at the situation as a whole and think that the true mission this year in Frisco isn’t to win a ring (because that’s unrealistic); it’s to just make it to 2025, when they can blow it all up and start over and paint everybody else as the reason for the reset. Cowboys’ Jerry Jones: ‘I’m Not Ready to Go’ on Prescott, Lamb, Parsons Contracts - Julia Stumbaugh, Bleacher Report Outside of Prescott, Jones also wants to 'wait and see' for Parsons’ and Lamb's contracts. Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones says his team hasn’t finalized extensions for its core three players because he’s “not ready to go.” Quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are currently only signed through 2024, while defensive end Micah Parsons’ contract expires after 2025. “If you’ve got trouble with when the timing is around here, it’s because I’m not ready to go,” Jones said during a pre-draft press conference Tuesday, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “You may be working on [contracts] and not moving anything but your eyebrows,” Jones continued, per Archer and DallasCowboys.com’s Patrik Walker. “Who in the world would think that we’re not working on it? I work on it. It pops up at two in the morning sometimes. What you’re actually questioning is why don’t you have something done and negotiated and put in the drawer? Jones then shut down the possibility that the Cowboys could search for a replacement quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Could Dak Prescott and Bill Belichick team up in 2025 — on the Giants? - Fox Sports If Dallas ends up cleaning house next year, Dak could wind up with a division foe. Dak Prescott is the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback, and Jerry Jones is confident he will stay that way for many years to come. But according to "First Things First" host Nick Wright, this upcoming NFL season could be the last time that sentence holds truth. Prescott is entering the final year of his four-year, $160 million contract, and will be headed for unrestricted free agency barring an extension agreement that currently appears on hold. If talks completely collapse between Prescott and the Cowboys and he hits free agency, Wright believes the Giants should not only pursue their current NFC East foe, but also bring back their former defensive coordinator — legendary New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. "If you are the Mara family, you have the sixth pick in the draft," Wright said Tuesday. "But a lot of people have a team trading up in front of you, and you don't draft a quarterback. … You have another year with Daniel Jones, which means you have another disappointing season. And you have the opportunity in the offseason to say ‘Hey, we’re gonna bring in Dak Prescott to be our quarterback, and Bill Belichick to be our head coach.'" Wright claims that would instantly restore the Giants to what they have been many times in the past — one of the "prestige franchises" in the entire NFL. "By the way, the Giants aren't the only team that could do that, but with Bill Belichick floating out there, and Dak Prescott the best quarterback in forever to [potentially] hit true free agency," Wright said, "[There is] the ability for any franchise, to with the stroke of a check, remake the entire version of their team. Greatest coach ever, one of the best quarterbacks to ever leave via free agency [in his prime]."

14 hours ago Pruitt to i.l., Anderson up
Photo by Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images Grant Anderson has returned The Texas Rangers have placed pitcher Austin Pruitt on the 15 day injured list with a knee injury, it was announced today. To take Pruitt’s place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled pitcher Grant Anderson from AAA Round Rock. This move was announced late, less than an hour before game time, so it may be the injury is something that flared up during warm ups or didn’t respond to treatment today as expected. Josh Sborz could be activated from the injured list as soon as tomorrow, so Anderson’s stay in the big leagues could be very brief.
